New Southern Living Hotels Launch with First Resort to Be Built in Tuscaloosa, Alabama

Friday February 21, 2020 (Birmingham, AL and Tuscaloosa, AL)

Meredith Corporation’s (NYSE: MDP, http://www.meredith.com/) Southern Living announces the launch of Southern Living Hotels, a new hotel brand that is set to debut its first property in Tuscaloosa, AL in 2022.

Southern Living Hotels, developed by Southern Living in partnership with the Lifestyle + Hotel Group through a licensing agreement, will provide an immersive new way for consumers to experience the Southern Living brand. Set on 37+ acres encompassing over 2,500 linear feet of waterfront, the brand’s first hotel in Tuscaloosa will be located on Rice Mine Road overlooking the Black Warrior River and the University of Alabama campus.

Sid Evans, Editor in Chief of Southern Living, said, “I’m thrilled to launch this new hotel collection as we continue to grow our brand and create authentic new experiences for our audience of women who are passionate about the modern southern lifestyle.  This is an incredible opportunity bring to life our point of view in areas that are core to Southern Living, from food and home décor to style, entertaining, and of course, travel.”

The real estate for the property was purchased by SLH Tuscaloosa, LLC. and the low-density resort plan focuses on preserving most of the site’s old growth trees and existing wetlands with the goal of creating a park-like environment for the resort. The hotel will be designed to LEED environmental standards—the first of its kind in Tuscaloosa. The developer is expected to break ground and begin construction on the 120-room boutique lifestyle hotel this summer.

“Southern Living Hotels will celebrate authentic Southern Hospitality, said Bill Shoaf, President of Lifestyle + Hotel Group. “Traditional hotel brands take a one-size-fits-all approach to travel. Each of our hotels will be designed and programmed to serve the needs of the female traveler with customized amenities and functionality to create hotels she will remember forever and miss until she returns.”

The hotel will bring the iconic Southern Living brand to life and celebrate local culture, with a special focus on warm hospitality and decor, exceptional culinary experiences, and mindfulness. With a state-of-the art wellness center, welcoming common spaces exuding a home-like feel, a destination restaurant, a rooftop lounge, a food hall on the river, and private event space, the hotel will have 120 guestrooms and will also be home to 32 Southern Living Residence cottages.

Additional Southern Living Hotels will be introduced across the southern United States. “Our team and partners could not be more excited about this opportunity in Tuscaloosa and it is just one of many we have in the pipeline at the moment,” said Shoaf.
